SAN and NAS technology was great, but not designed with virtualization in mind. In a virtualized datacenter SAN/NAS technology creates bottle necks. No matter how you slice it (pun intended) a virtual machine always performs better when it is stored on local storage rather that a ssd or a spindle that is a mile away, 100 ft. away or even 1U away if it is connected through iSCSI or NFS on 10gE copper or fibre, even infiniband. I am standing up a Nutanix based datacenter today. Once done I will share my thoughts and opinions on how well it measures up to or outperforms my SAN / NAS based datacenter. As well, I am also looking for ease of deployment and time to market. Going to be a long fun day! Stay Tuned!
